Can You Picture Yourself Here?
You can feel the subtle touch of sunlight across your eyelids, but you’re not reay to open your eyes just yet. You take a few minutes to just enjoy that lovely time inbetween sleep and wake, when you’re more aware of the sounds and smells around you. This is why you come here, to slow things down, take a couple of deep breaths.
You let your senses wander, while keeping your eyes closed. You can hear what sounds like a finch, maybe a brown-capped? Then the softer, more harmonious notes of what must be a longspur. You’re still working hard to distinguish the different calls. After a hike along the Colorado Birding Trail a few months ago, you almost feel like you’re noticing all the little birds flitting about for the first time. You’re close to mastering all the chirps and tweets that live on your property.
Sitting at an elevation of just about 9,000 feet and up on a hill, you have fantastic views out in the valley down below you, and of all the mountain peaks. You can tell without leaving your bed that it’s a crisp, cool morning. Like a cold start to an autumn day, when the sunshine still feels warm in the afternoons, and fog covers the ground in the morning. You slowly stretch out and get out of bed.
You turn the kettle on to start making some coffee. It’s cool inside the RV, you can see a bit of dew on the windows. The coffee will help warm you up. You sit patiently waiting for the water to boil, looking out the window. A small bird flies by and catches your eye. Huh. You laugh and think to yourself “Well there you have it”. Turns out it was a warbler singing by your window. Guess you still need a bit of practice.
Walking over to the kitchenette window, you see the valley below covered in a layer of fog. It’s a beautiful morning. The sun’s rays are starting to cut through the clouds and into the fog. You can see some spots where the fog has already melted. It’ll be clear and blue skies in no time. Another perfect day for a walk.
